Historische Stätten des Ersten Weltkriegs

Australian National Memorial

Located in Villers Bretonneux, the Australian National Memorial was inaugurated in 1938. It houses a Commonwealth cemetery from the First World War. On its walls are inscribed the names of the 11,000 Australian soldiers who died for France, missing or without burial.

Located at the back of the Australian National Memorial, the Sir John Monash Centre tells the story of these soldiers during the First World War.

Every year on April 25, the ANZAC Day ceremony is held to honour the soldiers who distinguished themselves during the Great War, especially during the battles of 1918.

In the centre of Villers Bretonneux is the Franco-Australian Museum, which was completely renovated in 2016.

Lochnagar Crater (glory hole) La Boisselle

Formed by nearly 30 tons of explosives, this hole 90m in diameter and 20 deep, is the only well-preserved testimony of the attack of July 1, 1916 (beginning of the Battle of the Somme) accessible to the public.

On 1 July 1916, the beginning of the Battle of the Somme, La Boisselle was one of the British's priority objectives. At 0728 hours, on either side of the road leading to Bapaume, they detonated two mines under the German lines. Y Sape to the west of the village and Lochnagar Crater to the east. The funnel of the first was refilled after the war, the funnel of the second, still visible, became a place of memory. However, the village will not be captured that day. In fact, at the end of this first deadly day, only Mametz and Montauban, located a little further east, were taken by British troops and it was not until 3 July that La Boisselle fell.

During the German offensive in Picardy in the spring of 1918, the village was lost only to be recaptured on 24 August by the 8th Royal Berks.

A very moving ceremony is held every July 1 at 7:28 a.m.
